2015: The Year in Review

Before the books on 2015 are closed, take a look at this compilation of pieces selected to receive the seventh annual Albies for the year’s best writing on the global political economy. Named for the political economist Albert O. Hirschman, these winning stories offer interesting perspectives on factors affecting economies around the world.

Financial Stories We’re Watching in 2016

If the first few days are an indicator, 2016 will not be a quiet year. FASB may change the definition of materiality that auditors use to determine what corporations must disclose in their financial statements. The proposal could result in less available information for investors.

Talks have begun to resolve decades-old property claims that arose in the aftermath of the Cuban revolution. These claims are a significant obstacle to normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba, since the U.S. trade embargo can’t be lifted until the claims are resolved.

While awaiting legislation that would allow U.S. territories to file Chapter 9 bankruptcies, Puerto Rico began the year by defaulting on moneys owed to lower level creditors. Competing views of whether the proposed legislation is a rescue or a bailout, and the impact of election year politics, are likely to prolong the island’s economic uncertainties.
